M1909 U.S. ARMY BOLO KNIFE
This monster U.S. Army M1909 Bolo knife was produced by the Springfield Armory intended for use in the Pacific Islands to clear brush and whatever else they wanted to use it for. This knife is just a very well made Bolo style knife that copied the knives used by the natives on the pacific islands. I will start with the grip, The grip is made with hard walnut wood, with a brass end cap (quite often missing) with two brass rivets holding the grips to the tang. There is a hole in the grip at the top to fasten a leather strap to it. The cross guard is again heavy brass. The blade at the cross guard is 3/8" thick and tappers to the rounded end. The blade is stamped S A over a flaming ordnance bomb and dated 1912.The opposite side has a U S and a serial number 23190. The blade has been sharpened and used. There are some very minor nicks to the blade edge. The Leather Scabbard like the knife is over constructed. The belt fastener is of the typical steel Krag rifle bayonet scabbard style. The scabbard throat is made from two heavy brass pieces with a plate holding the belt attachment. The brown leather is again heavily constructed with four rivets holding the throat and leather pieces together. The reverse is stamped ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 1912 with inspectors stamp HEK. There is also the letters GHW stamped up by the cross guard. Then there are the letters WP stamped above the GHW. Seems that too many people approved this scabbard, it must been a government job. This is a early well inspected set that is getting harder to find at a reasonable price.
