US NAVAL CUTLASS MODEL 1860

For some reason this 1860 Cutlass style has always been a favorite of mine. This one has been in my collection for over 40+ years and the duplicate is still on display. This Cutlass blade is stamped on the Ricasso with the manufacture name Ames Sword Co. of Chicopee Mass. The reverse side of the Ricasso has the Navy acceptance stamp along with the inspectors initials of D.R. Who is Daniel Reynolds. All Ames swords usually has inspectors stamps on every major piece of the sword. In this case the Pommel is also stamped by inspector D.R. The counter guard has 16 M and 612 stamped in the inside cross guard and this is the rack number 16,612. The blade has a dark finish to it and there is only one small nick on the cutting edge. The leather washer is complete between the blade and counter guard. The wood handle is missing the leather and wire wrap. the blade and grip and guard are solidly fastened, no wiggle. The leather Scabbard is complete and fits the sword without any problem. The two impressed groves on the Scabbard face are present and the multiple copper rivets down the reverse side of the Scabbard are all there along with the last rivet where a drag usually is located. Condition very good +++ for a 150+ years old. Side note the 1860 Cutlass was on board ships up to the beginning of WWII.
