AMERICAN 1833 DRAGOON SABER X AMES

This sword was Ames first contract sword for the government and highly collectible for that reason.The 1833 Dragoon Saber is a direct copy of the British light cavalry saber of 1822. Most of our military swords were copied directly from other countries. This sword has a 34” slightly curved blade with the English style heavy rounded quill back. The Ricasso is engraved N P Ames Cutler Springfield Mass 1835 in cursive writing, on the reverse side horizontal on th blade is written United States above a flor pattern. The blade is dark with age. I started with the sword blade first as the early factory markings for the Ames company is so important. The leather wrapped grip has the full multi strand twisted brass wire around the entire grip. The half basket brass guard is with two added branches. The basket, Quillon and Backstrap are highlighted with engraved lines running up to the stepped pommel. The scabbard has a heavy rusted coat on it producing a dark brown black appearance. The drag show heavy use as the bottom side is well worn. Condition sword very good + Scabbard fair +
