WW2 USAAF KIA PURPLE HEART DOCUMENTS
This is a complete set to include the Purple Heart and President Accolade document. Both have been glued to a hard paper backing for a display. The Purple Heart document for First Lieutenant William J. Young A.S.N. 0-753266 list him as Killed in Action September 18th, 1945. What is intriguing about this set of documents is the date of death on the PH document is incorrect. According to the Missing Air Crew Report Lt Young was the pilot of a B17-F on a bombing mission going to Poznan, Poland, and was last seen near in the vicinity of Bornhelm Island, off Sweden. Lt. Young’s bomber was shot down April 11th, 1944 by German aircraft. There was only one crew member who survived out of a crew of 10 men and he was picked up by a German Patrol Boat. Lt. Young’s plane serial number was 42-29939 from the 8th Air Force 96th Group 338 Squadron. I have purchased quite a few paper groupings like this from veteran’s families or relatives where the vet was buried with the medal or some one in the family took it years ago. The incorrect dat on the PH document most likely the time it took for the information to work its way to the awards division. Condition very good+++
