US ARMY ENGINEERS BUILDING THE ALASKA HIGHWAY 1943
I found this grouping last year at a gun show and forgot about it. This is the most complete album and loose photos that I have ever seen on the building of the Alaska highway. The album itself is in bad shape but its the photos that count. There are three pages of guys wishing him good luck etc along with their addresses. There is a copy of a Voluntary Duty in Parachute Units for Pfc. Leo J Battle USSN 16045313 signed by Battle and a witness so maybe his departure in 43 was for this. I have tried to research him beyond what I have but to no luck will try later tonight. There is a yard long photo of his Engineer Training Battalion from Feb. 1942, a large photo of him, some poems and a couple telegrams coming home. Now the part that is just great there are 42 photos in the album with many missing, and another 146 small and medium sized photos loose and I am sure most of them came from the album. What is great about this is that it really is a history of the building the highway. It shows them fording rivers and building bridges over them all with wood which is all around them. Bulldozing the land to make the pathway for the highway, the equipment, the tents they liven in, the supplies needed to run the equipment. There are photos of hunters returning with game, I am sure they liked the change in menu. Some photos show the mud that they had to try and get thru on the highway. All I can say this is a great visual history of the building of the highway, I have looked at the photos many times and used a magnifier to check them all out. They carried the 1903 Springfield rifle and one photo shows a double barrel shotgun. There are photos of the Taku Trading building and the Hudson’s Bay building along with some wrecked trucks and lots of mud.
This really is quite a group of photos with a lot of history behind it. Condition Ok photo album photos very good +++
