BRONZE PLAQUE FROM USS HAMUL TO USS LEE FOX
Once again a desk ornaments has risen its ugly head and made me buy this neat item. This small 4.5” wide and 3 1/4” high cast bronze top on a wood base is one of the better ship made item. This desk ornament was made by the U.S.S. HAMUL a Destroyer Tender worked on repair wise. The face is covered with all the various item systems that the ship could repair on the Destroyers. This tender worked in the Atlantic and Pacific campaign servicing 348 destroyers during the war. The ship also removed the demolition charges from the German submarine U-505 the first captured enemy warship on the high seas since 1815. Jan. 1st 1945 it reached Saipan and Eniwetok preparing amphibious craft for the massive Iwo Jima invasion. On march 27 sailed to Ulithi repairing damaged craft returning from the Okinawa campaign. On Feb. 1946 she departed Okinawa with over 400 homeward bound veterans
The ship was scheduled for the scrap yard but the Korean War broke out and once again it was put to use, and finally decommissioned in 1962.
This desk ornament was given to the U.S.S. Lee Fox a Buckley class Destroyer Escort. The ship was named after Ensign Lee Fox who was killed in action during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Fox completed 18 Atlantic Crossings between Nov. 43 and Jan 45.She was sold for scrap in Jan.1966
