This is a great WWI valor award group to 2nd Lt. Cortland Arthur Johnson, Co. I 165th Inf. 42 Division. Included in the group is the following 1- Silver Star named and numbered 5954 2- Purple Heart named an numbered 12230 3- WWI Victory Medal with Aisne-Marne, Champagne-Marne, Defensive Sector 4-N.Y.State WWI Conspicuous Service Medal named and numbered 1843 made by the Tiffany & co. 5-N.Y.State WWI Medal numbered 8349. 6- Set of miniature Medals 7- Center of an ID Bracelet listing 2nd Lt. C. A. Johnson Co I 165th Inf. US 83 Division 8- Copy of the Silver Star award card showing award to be mailed May 2, 1923. SS awarded for action on July 23, 1918 north of the river Ouroq. Item 616, GO 16 WD 1823 For gallantry in action north of the river Ourcq, France, July 28, 1918. He led a detachment against and silenced a machine gun nest, capturing the gun and killing the operators. Cortland Johnson had a successful legal and judicial career as a Judge and retired as a NYS Supreme Court Judge. This is a great documented grouping showing that his loss of his left arm did not hinder his life after the war.
