NAVY DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS W/CASE
This is one of the moments that you discover that the named flying cross you have owned for years is really something.
This DFC was awarded to Machinist’s Mate First Class Donald Charles Argersinger NSN 0-6001712. The Cross was awarded for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Plane Captain for Navy Patrol Bomber in a low level attack on Marcus Island on 9 May 1945.
The DSC is the thicker Navy style and engraved with his name and three lines added above and one line under his name the ribbon bar is also the Navy style with the wider bar. The case is also the Navy style.
Argersinger was with PBS-102 Squadron VP-22. What is so great is that on line there is an abundance of information regarding this bombing mission and many photographs taken during the actual bombing mission. For me that’s a first to have actual photographs taken during a low level bombing mission of inter 200 feet off the ground. The Japanese were ready for them and put extremely heavy flak with the low level everyone shot at them with their rifles and probably their pistols. One plane was shot down and part of the crew rescued by a submarine, there photos of that rescue to.
To much information to put in this description.
This is something that I should keep, but I have to stick with my area of US medals, can not own it all.
